When to Schedule Your Maternity Photos: The Perfect Timing Guide for San Diego Moms
One of the most common questions I hear all the time from expecting mothers is, “When should I schedule my maternity session?”
I’m glad people ask, it’s such an important question because timing can make all the difference between capturing your beautiful bump at its peak, and missing that perfect window altogether.
After photographing maternity sessions for over sixteen years at my Carlsbad studio, I’ve learned that while there’s a sweet spot that works for most mamas, every pregnancy is unique. Let me walk you through everything you need to know about timing your maternity photos so you look and feel absolutely radiant.

The Ideal Timing: 30-34 Weeks
For most expecting mothers I recommend scheduling your maternity session between 30 and 34 weeks. This timeframe hits the perfect balance for several important reasons!
During this period, your belly is beautifully rounded and prominent—there’s no question you’re expecting! You’re showing that gorgeous bump without feeling overly uncomfortable or restricted in your movement. Most mamas at this stage still have good energy levels and can comfortably pose for the 60-90 minutes that a typical session requires.
At 30-34 weeks, you’re also far enough along that you’ve moved past the first trimester exhaustion and any early pregnancy discomfort, but you’re not yet at the stage where swollen feet, back pain, or exhaustion might make a photoshoot feel overwhelming.
You’re glowing, your bump is picture-perfect, and you still have the stamina to enjoy the experience!
Why Earlier Than 28 Weeks Might Be Too Soon
Some eager first-time moms want to schedule their sessions earlier—around 24-28 weeks—but I typically recommend waiting a bit longer unless there are special circumstances. Before 28 weeks, many women haven’t developed that full, rounded belly that photographs so beautifully. The bump might still look more like you had a big lunch rather than a baby on board!
That said, second, third, or fourth-time moms often show much earlier than first-time mothers. If you’re on your second or subsequent pregnancy and have a prominent bump at 28 weeks, we can absolutely work with that timeline. The key is ensuring your belly is clearly visible and beautifully round for the photos.

Special Circumstances: When to Adjust Your Timing
Expecting Twins or Multiples
If you’re carrying twins, triplets, or more, I strongly recommend scheduling your maternity session earlier—ideally between 26 and 30 weeks. Multiple pregnancies typically result in larger bumps earlier, and mamas carrying multiples often feel uncomfortable and restricted much sooner than those carrying singletons.
By 32 weeks with twins, many mothers are already on modified activity or bed rest, making a photoshoot impractical or even medically inadvisable. I want to capture you looking radiant and comfortable, so scheduling earlier ensures we get those stunning portraits before you’re feeling too restricted.
Booking Early Is Essential
Here’s something crucial that many first-time parents don’t realize: you should book your maternity session during your second trimester, even though you won’t have the actual photoshoot until your third trimester.
My Carlsbad photography studio only accepts a limited number of maternity sessions each month, and my calendar often fills up weeks or even months in advance. The last thing you want is to reach 30 weeks pregnant and discover that your preferred photographer is completely booked through your ideal timeframe.
When you book early, we can tentatively schedule your session around your due date. Then, as you progress through your pregnancy, we can fine-tune the exact date based on how you’re feeling and how your bump is developing.
This approach gives you peace of mind and ensures you have a guaranteed spot on my calendar!

My temperature-controlled studio means you’ll be comfortable regardless of when your session falls, with no concerns about heat, cold, or unpredictable weather conditions affecting your comfort during this special time.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best week to take maternity photos?
The ideal time for maternity photos is between 30 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. During this window, your belly is beautifully rounded and prominent, you’re still comfortable enough to move and pose easily, and you typically have good energy levels. This timing works for most women with routine pregnancies.
Can I take maternity photos earlier than 30 weeks?
While you certainly can schedule photos earlier, I generally recommend waiting until at least 28-30 weeks for first-time mothers so your bump is clearly visible and beautifully round. Second or subsequent pregnancies often show earlier, so we can schedule around 28 weeks if you already have a prominent bump. The key is ensuring your belly photographs well.
What if I’m carrying twins—when should I schedule my session?
For twin pregnancies, I recommend scheduling your maternity session between 26 and 30 weeks. You’ll show earlier and larger than singleton pregnancies, and you’ll likely feel uncomfortable sooner. By 32 weeks with twins, many mothers are on modified activity, so earlier scheduling ensures we capture beautiful photos while you’re still feeling relatively comfortable.
When should I book my maternity session, not just when should I have it?
You should book your maternity session during your second trimester, even though the actual photoshoot won’t happen until your third trimester. My studio only accepts limited clients each month, and my calendar often fills weeks in advance. Booking early guarantees you’ll have a spot during your ideal timeframe.
Is 36 or 37 weeks too late for maternity photos?
While 36-37 weeks is later than I typically recommend, it’s not too late if you’re still feeling comfortable and energetic. I’ve photographed many mamas at 38 weeks who looked stunning and felt great. The key is being honest with yourself about your comfort level. If you’re feeling good and want the photos, we can definitely make it work.
Should I book maternity and newborn sessions together?
Yes! Booking both sessions together is wonderful for creating a cohesive collection documenting your entire journey from pregnancy through your baby’s first days. It also often provides better package value than booking separately. When you book both, we can coordinate timing for both sessions right from the start.
What should I wear to my maternity session?
My studio has a collection of over 150 maternity gowns, wraps, and dresses for you to choose from, so you don’t need to bring anything unless you have something special you want to wear. I’ll help you select pieces that flatter your bump and match your personal style. We can incorporate multiple looks for variety in your gallery.
