I’m Now the First APNPI Accredited Maternity Photographer in San Diego

Some news I have been waiting to share: I am now the first APNPI Accredited Maternity Photographer in San Diego. The accreditation came through after a full review of my maternity work by the Academy of Newborn Photography’s international judging panel, and I could not be more proud to bring this home to my studio in Carlsbad.

What is APNPI, and what does accreditation mean?

APNPI is an international professional association created by newborn, maternity and child photographers. Its whole purpose is to raise standards in an industry that, believe it or not, is completely unregulated. Anyone with a camera can offer maternity or newborn photography with no training at all, and most parents have no way of knowing that before they book.

Accreditation is APNPI’s way of changing that. It recognises photographers who have proven, through judged work and formal training, that they are specialists in their chosen field. It is also a stepping stone toward recognised designations like Craftsman of Photography and Master Photographer, which is where I am heading next.

What did I have to do to earn it?

This was not a certificate you buy or a weekend course. To be considered, I had to complete three things:

  • Pass the APNPI Safety course, which covers safe handling and posing for maternity and newborn sessions.
  • Hold the Qualified Newborn Photographer Certification, which I have held for some time.
  • Submit 12 maternity images against a strict set of requirements to an APNPI approved judging panel, with every single image needing to be accepted.

That last part was the hardest. Twelve images, no room for a weak one. The panel looks at lighting, camera settings, posing angles, editing, props and colour palettes, right down to the details most people would never consciously notice in a finished portrait. Here are a few of the images that went before the judges.

Why does it matter who photographs your maternity session?

Because this kind of work is delicate, and it shows. Posing a mom-to-be so she feels beautiful and comfortable, lighting a studio session so the result is consistent every single time, styling with gowns and backdrops that flatter rather than distract: these are skills that take years to build, and they are exactly what the judging panel assesses.

When you book an APNPI accredited maternity photographer, you are booking someone who has invested real time and money into perfecting the craft, and whose work has been independently judged to meet an international standard. In an unregulated industry, that is the closest thing you have to a guarantee of quality.

What does this mean for your session with me?

Honestly, not much changes in the day-to-day, because the standards I was judged against are the standards I have always worked to. Every maternity session in my Carlsbad studio still includes professional hair and makeup, access to my collection of more than 150 gowns, and a relaxed, one-session-per-day pace so you never feel rushed.

What changes is that you now have independent confirmation of what my clients have been telling me for 17 years. And I am not stopping here. I continue to train and certify because you and your family deserve the best version of my work every time you step in front of my camera.

If you are expecting and thinking about maternity portraits, the best window is usually between 30 and 34 weeks. You can read more about how my sessions work on the maternity photography page, or get in touch and we can talk through what you have in mind. I work with mums-to-be from Encinitas, Del Mar, La Jolla, and across North County San Diego.
