A guide to cake smash photography in Carlsbad

Your baby’s first birthday arrives faster than anyone tells you it will. One day you are holding a fragile newborn, and the next you are watching a confident, opinionated one-year-old reach toward a cake with absolute determination. I am Stacey, and I have been photographing that moment in Carlsbad and across North County San Diego since 2009. A cake smash session is one of the most joyful appointments of the entire year, for babies and for parents. Here is everything you need to plan yours.

What is a cake smash photography session?

A cake smash session is a professional portrait session built around a baby’s first encounter with birthday cake. The session is styled around a theme you choose, the cake is custom-made to match, and the whole thing is photographed from the first tentative touch right through to the splash bath at the end.

At my Carlsbad studio, sessions are never rushed so if your little one needs a little extra time to warm up, that’s not a problem at all.

What is included in a cake smash session at Lovely Baby Photography?

Every session includes the fully styled set, a custom cake matched to your theme, outfits for baby from the studio wardrobe, a family portrait block, the cake smash, and a splash bath. You do not need to bring anything. The studio handles the setup, styling, and teardown.  You are able to choose three backdrops, along with outfit changes from the studio wardrobe.  And family pictures as well.

The studio wardrobe has outfits for babies at every stage, from delicate birthday rompers to themed costumes, and the backdrop collection runs to over 250 options. If you have a color palette or a character theme in mind, there is almost certainly a set that fits. If you have something specific and unusual, I am happy to build it.

How do families choose a theme from 250+ options?

The theme consultation is one of my favorite parts of the booking process. I will be sending you a link to view the themes and backdrops that I have available.  It’s up to you which ones you choose.

The most-booked themes over the years in North County San Diego include garden florals, nautical, Wild One, woodland animals, princess, boho, and seasonal sets for fall and winter. Gender-neutral themes like stars and clouds, travel, and farm are also popular. Whatever you land on, the set is built and styled before you arrive.

What does the day of the session actually look like?

You arrive at the studio and get settled. I keep things calm and unhurried from the start, because a baby who feels comfortable is a baby who photographs well. We open with family portraits on a basic backdrop.  This portion of the session is usually about 10-15 minutes to get baby warmed up.

Once family pictures are complete, we move onto baby’s solo portraits.  We start in the first two sets, and then move onto the 3rd, cake smash set.  Some babies make a mess and others want nothing to do with the cake, and that’s ok!  At the very end we clean up with a cute splash bath and pictures!

Who books cake smash sessions at the studio?

Most families booking a cake smash with me are parents who had their newborn session at the studio and are back for the closing chapter of the first year. Others are families who found me through the 100+ five-star Google reviews or through a recommendation from friends in Encinitas, Oceanside, or Carlsbad.

I also see a lot of grandparent bookings: grandparents who want to gift a first birthday session to their children. And I regularly work with families who had their baby at Tri-City Medical Center, Scripps Encinitas, or Palomar Medical Center and have been looking for a Carlsbad studio since then.

How much does a cake smash session cost?

Why does the APNPI accreditation matter for a cake smash session?

APNPI is the Association of Professional Newborn Photographers International. Accreditation is granted after an independent review of safety training, posing technique, and studio practice. For cake smash, that training means stable sets, baby-safe props, and an experienced eye watching every moment baby is on a raised surface or near water.

The splash bath is the part that parents sometimes ask about most. Warm water, a calm environment, and a photographer who knows how to keep baby safe and photograph at the same time. APNPI training covers exactly that. Not every photographer offering cake smash sessions holds this accreditation.

When should I book a cake smash session in Carlsbad?

Book eight to twelve weeks before baby’s first birthday. Spring and fall are the busiest seasons for first birthdays in North County, and weekends in those months fill quickly. If you want a Saturday session or a specific themed set during those periods, book early.

The ideal session window is eleven to thirteen months. Baby is sitting confidently, has developed real opinions and reactions, and is still small enough to fit comfortably in the styled sets. Earlier than ten months can work but needs a conversation first. Later than fourteen months is also possible but the energy and reactions are different.

Frequently asked questions

Does my baby need to walk for a cake smash session?

No. Most cake smash sessions are done with baby sitting on the floor or on a low styled surface. Walking is not required, and the poses work just as well whether baby is cruising furniture or fully mobile.

What if my baby does not like the cake?

It happens, and it still photographs beautifully. A baby who looks at the cake with suspicion, or who pokes it once and then looks at you for reassurance, tells a genuine story. I do not stage reactions. Whatever your baby does is the right thing to photograph.

Can siblings be in the session?

Yes. The family portrait block at the start is the right time for siblings, and they can join in around the cake if you want a shared moment. Let me know during the consultation and I will plan the timing accordingly.

Is the cake included or do I need to provide it?

The custom cake is included in every session. It is sized for baby and for photos, matched to the theme, and made with a simple, baby-friendly recipe. If there are any allergies or dietary considerations, let me know when you book and I will work with my usual bakery contact.

How long before I receive the finished artwork?

You see the full gallery at your ordering appointment, typically two to three weeks after the session. Finished artwork arrives four to six weeks after the ordering appointment, depending on what you choose.
