What maternity gowns are available at a San Diego photography studio?

Quick Answer

Lovely Baby Photography in Carlsbad has a studio wardrobe of over 125 maternity gowns, wraps, and bodysuits available to every client at no extra cost. Styles range from soft and flowing lace to fitted satin and glamorous silhouettes, in a wide range of sizes and colours. You do not need to buy or bring anything for your maternity session.

One of the most common worries I hear from expecting mothers before their maternity session is what to wear. After photographing maternity sessions in Carlsbad and across North County San Diego since 2009, I built a solution right into the studio. My client wardrobe holds over 125 hand-picked maternity gowns, wraps, and bodysuits, all chosen specifically for how they photograph on a range of body types and skin tones. Here is a look at what the collection includes and how to get the most out of it at your session.

What maternity gowns are in the studio wardrobe?

The collection spans soft and flowing styles all the way through to fitted, structured gowns. On the flowing end, there are delicate lace gowns in ivory, blush, and sage, chiffon wrap styles that drape beautifully on a bump, and lightweight gauze pieces that photograph well both indoors and outside. On the fitted end, there are satin silhouettes that emphasise the shape of the bump, ribbed bodysuits for a clean modern look, and structured velvet gowns for a more dramatic portrait.

The collection is updated regularly. Most clients arrive for their consultation having looked at a few inspirational images online and leave having discovered two or three gowns they would never have thought to choose themselves. That is one of the reasons the consultation is so valuable.

How many looks can I wear during the session?

Up to five complete looks per session. That typically means two to three gown changes, sometimes a wrap or bodysuit, and occasionally a more relaxed or lifestyle look to round out the gallery. Five looks is generous compared to what most studios offer, and it gives the final gallery a real range of moods and styles.

During the consultation we narrow down the options based on what resonates with you, what colours work with your planned nursery or wall space, and how many looks make sense for the time you have booked. Most clients end up with three to four strong looks rather than stretching to all five, and that is usually the right call.

What sizes does the wardrobe cover?

The collection is sized to fit a range of body types, from petite frames to plus sizes. Maternity gowns are cut with a bump in mind, so most styles accommodate a full third-trimester figure naturally. Wraps and chiffon styles are the most universally flexible because they tie or drape to fit any shape.

During the consultation I ask about your size and your usual style preferences so I can pull gowns ahead of the session. You arrive to a pre-selected wardrobe of six to eight options in your size rather than rifling through a rack under time pressure. That preparation makes the session day much calmer and more enjoyable.

Can I bring my own gowns or outfit pieces?

Yes, and many clients do. Some families have a gown with sentimental value, a specific colour they want for the nursery artwork, or a style they have been planning since early in the pregnancy. Bringing one or two pieces of your own alongside the studio wardrobe gives the session a personal dimension that is worth having.

A few things that work well from home: a loose knit or wool cardigan in a neutral tone, a partner’s button-down shirt for a lifestyle look, a simple white tank for a relaxed lifestyle look. If you are unsure whether something will photograph well, send me a photo during the consultation and I will give you an honest opinion.

When is the best time for a maternity session?

The best window is between 28 and 34 weeks. The bump is full and round, you are still comfortable enough to move between gown changes and poses, and the pregnancy glow is typically at its strongest. Earlier than 28 weeks, the bump can look smaller in photos than it feels in person. Later than 34 weeks, sessions become physically tiring and scheduling becomes unpredictable.

That said, I have photographed gorgeous sessions at 36 and 37 weeks for clients who could not get in earlier. If you are later than ideal, reach out and we will make it work.

Is professional hair and makeup included?

Professional hair and makeup is available as an add-on and is one of the most popular additions to a maternity session. Most clients who add hair and makeup describe it as the detail that made the session feel truly luxurious. You arrive styled, and the gowns go on over a polished look rather than a hurried one.

The hair and makeup artist works from the studio on the morning of the session. Plan an extra ninety minutes if you are adding it. I can recommend the artist I work with regularly during the consultation if you want to see their portfolio before booking.

What does a maternity session at Lovely Baby Photography cost?

Most families invest around two thousand dollars for their maternity experience, which covers the full session, the studio wardrobe, and the heirloom artwork they take home. Full pricing is on the investment page.

The finished artwork, framed wood wall art, fine art albums, matted prints, is designed to live on your walls for decades. Maternity images are among the most requested for large-format wall art because the shapes and tones photograph so well at scale. Most clients who see their gallery at the ordering appointment end up choosing a larger piece than they initially planned.

If you are pregnant and thinking about booking a maternity session, the time to reach out is now. I photograph maternity sessions for clients across Carlsbad, Encinitas, Del Mar, La Jolla, and across North County San Diego, and the wider San Diego area. Send a message through the contact page to check availability and schedule a consultation. You can also read more on the maternity photography page.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to bring anything for the maternity session?

No. The studio wardrobe covers everything you need for the session itself. Bring any personal items you want to include, a partner’s shirt or a sentimental piece, and comfortable shoes for between gown changes. That is all.

How many weeks pregnant should I be for my session?

Between 28 and 34 weeks is the ideal window. The bump is full and round, you are still mobile between wardrobe changes, and the glow of pregnancy is typically at its peak. Later sessions are possible but worth discussing in advance.

Where do maternity sessions take place?

All maternity sessions take place at the Carlsbad studio. The studio gives me full control over lighting, temperature, and styling, and you have access to my full collection of over 150 gowns without any weather concerns.

Can my partner or children be in the maternity photos?

Yes. Partner portraits and sibling photos are a natural part of a maternity session. I include a block for family portraits so everyone gets their moment without it taking over the full session time.

How far in advance should I book?

Book by weeks 20 to 24 of pregnancy to secure your preferred date around the 28 to 34 week window. Sessions fill quickly, especially on weekends and in the spring and fall seasons. Earlier bookings also give more time for the consultation and wardrobe planning.

You might also find it helpful to read about when to schedule your maternity photos before your session.

When will I see the finished maternity photos?

At your ordering appointment, usually two to three weeks after the session. That is where we design the wall art and album together. Finished products are delivered four to six weeks after the ordering appointment.
