Most studios book back-to-back in thirty-minute slots. I do not, because a rushed baby does not photograph well and first birthdays deserve better than a hurried slot.

How does the session actually flow on the day?

You arrive, we do a short wardrobe check for baby, and then we start with the family portrait block on the styled set before any cake comes out. Those are the calm, clean images most parents want alongside the messy ones. Dad, siblings, and grandparents are all welcome for this portion of the session.

Then the cake arrives. Some babies dive straight in. Others stare at it suspiciously for a few minutes before deciding it is absolutely worth destroying. Both reactions photograph beautifully. After the cake, we move to the splash bath, which is often where the session produces its most joyful images. Warm water, bubbles, and a baby who is genuinely delighted.

What size and flavour is the birthday cake?

The cake is included in every session and is matched to the theme. It is a small smash cake, sized for baby and for photos, with a butter cream finish decorated to suit the set. Most are vanilla or a light sponge. If you have a specific flavour request or a food allergy, mention it during the consultation and I will coordinate with the baker I work with regularly.

Some families also bring a larger celebration cake for a party later the same day, which is perfectly fine. I photograph that too if you want a few shots of the full cake before it is cut.

What does baby wear for the session?

Baby has full access to the studio wardrobe during the session. For pink themes, this usually means a soft floral romper, a tutu with a coordinating top, a ruffled bodysuit, or a simple linen dress depending on the theme. I pull a few options during the consultation so you can see what works with the set before the session day.

You are also welcome to bring something of your own if you have a special outfit in mind. Some families bring a tutu or a custom smash outfit they have ordered, and we can work that into the session alongside or instead of the studio wardrobe pieces.
