Every cake smash session includes the fully styled set, a custom cake matched to the theme, an outfit for baby from the studio wardrobe, a short family portrait block at the start, the cake smash itself, and a splash bath finish. You do not need to bring anything.

Sessions run around two hours end to end, which is unusually long for a cake smash. Most studios book back to back in thirty minute slots. I do not, because a rushed baby is not a happy baby, and unhappy baby photos do not go on anyone’s wall.

How many themes are there to choose from?

The backdrop and prop collection is over 250 themes deep, which covers almost every request families arrive with. The most requested themes each year are butterflies, woodland, nautical, pink florals, baseball, boho, and seasonal sets like fall pumpkins, a winter wonderland, and spring meadow.

During the consultation I usually ask two questions to narrow it down: what colors are on your walls at home, and what is your baby’s personality. That gets us to the right theme within a few minutes.

What does a cake smash session actually look like on the day?

You arrive, we settle baby in, we start with a short family portrait block on the styled set before any cake appears. Those are the clean, calm images most parents want alongside the messy ones. Then the cake comes out.

Some babies dive straight in. Others examine the cake like it might explode. Both reactions photograph beautifully. When baby has had enough of the cake, usually after ten to fifteen minutes, we move to the splash bath, which is where the session often produces its best images. Warm water, bubbles, and a baby who is genuinely thrilled.

What about the cake itself?

I include the cake in every session. It is a small smash cake, matched to the theme, sized for baby and for photos. Most are vanilla or a light sponge with a simple butter cream finish, decorated to suit the set. Some families also bring a second larger cake for a family celebration afterwards, which is fine. I photograph that too if you want me to.

You are not paying for a thirty minute slot and a gallery of digital files, you are paying for two hours of my time, a styled and built-to-order set, a cake, a wardrobe, a splash bath, and heirloom products, framed wood wall art, fine art albums, matted prints, that hold up for decades.

Why does the APNPI accreditation matter for cake smash?

APNPI is the Association of Professional Newborn Photographers International. Accreditation means my safety training, posing technique, and studio practices have been independently reviewed against international standards. For cake smash, the same training translates into stable sets, baby-safe props, and watchful supervision on every raised surface.

Not every photographer offering cake smash has that training. Most do not. If your baby is on a bench, a cushion, or a raised set, the photographer’s hands and eyes need to be where they matter. Mine are, because APNPI trained me to know where that is.

How do I book a cake smash session in Carlsbad?

Do I need to bring the cake or the outfit?

No. Both are included. The cake is matched to your theme, and baby has access to the full studio wardrobe for the session.

Can older siblings be in the photos?

Yes. The family portrait block at the start of the session is the right moment for siblings, and they can join baby around the cake if you want a joint cake smash. Coordinated outfits look best, and the studio can suggest palettes during the consultation.

How long before I see the photos?

You will see the full gallery at your ordering appointment, usually two to three weeks after the session. That is the appointment where we design the wall art and the album together. Finished products take another four to six weeks depending on the artwork you choose.

Do you do outdoor cake smash sessions?

The full cake smash experience is indoors at the Carlsbad studio, because the styled sets, splash bath, and wardrobe need to be there. Outdoor work is usually a separate family session, which I also offer.
