When should I book my baby’s newborn photography session in San Diego?
Quick Answer
Book your newborn photography session during your second trimester, ideally between weeks 20 and 30 of pregnancy. The session itself happens in baby’s first fourteen days, when they sleep most deeply and curl naturally into those classic posed images. Stacey is APNPI accredited with 100+ five-star Google reviews and 16+ years photographing newborns in Carlsbad and San Diego.
One of the most common questions new parents ask is when to book the newborn session. The short answer is earlier than feels reasonable, which is exactly why I wrote this guide. I am Stacey, I run Lovely Baby Photography in Carlsbad, and I have been photographing newborns in San Diego since 2009. Here is the honest timeline for booking, from pregnancy announcement to the session itself.

When should I book my newborn photography session?
Book during your second trimester, between weeks 20 and 30 of pregnancy. That is the window when most families secure a date, and it leaves enough runway to plan the session, choose artwork, and prepare. I only take a small number of newborn sessions each month, so weekends and weekdays near an expected due date fill up fast.
If you are reading this in your third trimester, it is still worth reaching out. I keep a small amount of flexibility for late bookings where I can, but the earlier you are on my calendar, the more certain your date is.
When is the best age for a newborn photo session?
The best window for a posed newborn session is within the first fourteen days of life, and ideally between days five and ten. Babies sleep more deeply at that age, their limbs are still flexible, and they settle into curled, womb-like poses that become impossible a few weeks later.
After day fourteen, babies become more alert, more aware of their surroundings, and often develop baby acne or cradle cap. The posed images that people hire a newborn photographer for rely on those early days of sleep and softness.

What happens when I book?
When you book, you pay a small retainer to hold the two-week window around your due date. I do not lock you into a specific day, because babies do not work like that. Once baby arrives, you message me from the hospital and we schedule the session for five to ten days later.
Before baby arrives, we have a consultation call to talk through colour palette, wardrobe, artwork, and any family portraits you want included. Everything is ready to go before baby is born, so the session itself is a calm, unrushed day at the studio.
What if baby arrives early or late?
This is why the two-week booking window matters. Babies arrive when they arrive, and I build that into every newborn booking. If baby comes two weeks early, we move the session forward. If baby is two weeks late, we shift it back. You are not penalised either way.
Families who have twins, a NICU stay, or a longer hospital stay get the same flexibility. The session happens when baby is home, settled, and ready, not on a fixed calendar date.

How long does a newborn session take?
Plan for three to four hours at the studio. That sounds long, and it is, because newborns dictate the pace. Some babies are asleep the moment they arrive and we move through the session quickly. Others want to feed, burp, feed again, and then sleep, which is completely normal and the reason I never book two newborn sessions in the same day.
The studio is warm, quiet, and set up for the session before you arrive, soft music, heater running, wraps warmed, props ready. If you need to feed or change baby mid-session, that is part of the plan, not an interruption.
Why does APNPI accreditation matter for newborn photography?
APNPI, the Association of Professional Newborn Photographers International, is the only international accreditation for newborn specialists. It covers safe posing, prop safety, studio temperature and hygiene, and a written safety protocol every accredited photographer signs up to.
A lot of newborn photography you see on social media uses composite images, two or more photos combined, for any pose where baby is off the ground or in a position that cannot be held safely. I work that way too. A baby’s safety is non-negotiable and APNPI accreditation is how you know your photographer takes it seriously.

Who does the Carlsbad studio serve?
The studio is in Carlsbad and I work with families across Encinitas, Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos, Escondido, Del Mar, La Jolla, Rancho Santa Fe, Solana Beach, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, and wider San Diego. If baby was born at Tri-City Medical Center, Scripps Encinitas, or Palomar Medical Center, the studio is twenty to thirty minutes away depending on traffic.
For families who find the drive too much in the early newborn days, I also offer in-home lifestyle sessions across North County. It is a different look, softer and more documentary, but sometimes the right choice for a new mother recovering from a C-section.
What does a newborn session cost at Lovely Baby?
Most families invest around two thousand dollars for their newborn experience, which includes the session, the full service styling, and the artwork they take home. Full pricing and what is included is on the investment page.
That investment covers three to four hours of studio time, styled sets, a full client wardrobe for mom and baby, and heirloom products, framed wood wall art, fine art albums, and matted prints. It is the difference between a gallery of digital files that sits on a hard drive and artwork you actually live with.
If you are pregnant and thinking about newborn photography, send a message early. I book Carlsbad, Encinitas, Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos, Del Mar, La Jolla, and the wider North County San Diego area. Get in touch through the contact page to check availability and start the planning call. You can also see the full newborn service on the newborn photography page.
Frequently asked questions
How many weeks pregnant should I be when I book?
Between weeks 20 and 30 is the sweet spot. Later bookings are possible but limited. Earlier bookings are welcome and let you plan the artwork side of the experience properly.
What if my baby comes early?
No problem. The two-week booking window is built for exactly that. Message me from the hospital and we schedule the session for five to ten days after baby arrives.
Can dad, siblings, and grandparents be in the photos?
Yes. Family portraits with parents, siblings, and grandparents are included at the start of every newborn session, while baby is still settled and calm.
Is it safe to bring my newborn to the studio?
Yes. The studio is kept warm, quiet, and clean for every newborn session. I am APNPI accredited, which includes a full safety and hygiene protocol. If you are particularly concerned, we can also talk about private scheduling outside of normal studio hours.
What should I wear for the family portraits?
Soft neutral tones work best, cream, oatmeal, soft grey, dusty pink, pale blue. We talk through wardrobe during the consultation call, and the studio has a small client closet if you want to choose something on the day.
When will I see the photos?
You will see the full gallery at your ordering appointment, usually two to three weeks after the session. That is the appointment where we design the wall art and album together. Finished products take another four to six weeks depending on the artwork you choose.
