Why are six-month baby photos worth it?

Quick Answer

Six-month baby photos are worth it because this brief window captures a one-of-a-kind stage: baby sits up unaided for the first time, smiles with genuine delight, and still has those irresistible chubby cheeks before the crawling phase begins. At Lovely Baby Photography in Carlsbad, APNPI accredited photographer Stacey Marsh has over 100 five-star Google reviews and has been photographing San Diego babies since 2009. Sessions last about an hour and include access to the full studio wardrobe.

Six months is the in-between milestone that most parents almost skip, and almost every parent is glad they did not. By this age your baby has moved far beyond the sleepy, curled newborn stage, and they are not yet the busy crawler who will not stay still for a second. They sit up. They look at you. They break into those open-mouthed, gummy grins as if life itself is something to celebrate. I am Stacey, and I have been photographing babies at this age in Carlsbad and across North County San Diego since 2009. Here is why the six-month session deserves a place in your baby’s first year.

What makes six months such a special age for baby photography?

Six months is the sitter milestone. Most babies can now sit upright, either on their own or with a little support, which opens up a whole range of studio poses that simply are not possible earlier. You get full eye contact, real smiles, and those chunky thigh rolls that nobody warns you will disappear so quickly.

The personality is there too. Your baby has opinions now, favorite toys, favorite people, a sense of humor. That shows up beautifully in photos in a way that is genuinely different from a newborn session. I think of six months as the first time parents see their baby as a little person, rather than a newborn, and it is a joy to document that transition.

Why does this stage pass so fast?

Between six and nine months, babies change faster than at almost any other point in their first year. The sitter stage is short. Within a few weeks, most babies are pulling themselves to standing, then cruising furniture, then crawling at speed. The chubby cheeks begin to slim down. The gummy smile gets its first teeth. The stage that feels so present right now is genuinely fleeting.

Families who come back to me after baby’s first birthday often say the six-month photos are the ones they look at most. Not because they are more beautiful than the newborn images, but because they capture a stage that disappeared before anyone noticed it was gone.

What does a six-month session at the studio look like?

Six-month sessions at the studio run about an hour, which is the right pace for a baby who is awake and engaged but still working on their stamina. We start with baby settled and comfortable, then work through two or three setups depending on how baby is feeling.

I bring out textures, wraps, baskets, and simple wooden props that suit this age. Outfits come from the studio wardrobe, so you do not need to bring anything. The goal is clean, timeless portraits that will look just as good on your wall in twenty years as they do today. Most families choose a combination of solo portraits and a short parent-and-baby section.

How does a six-month session fit into baby’s first year plan?

Many families book a baby milestone photography package that covers the key stages across year one. Six months is one of the most popular milestones in that sequence, sitting between the newborn session and the one-year celebration.

If you are thinking about a full first-year collection, the ideal arc is: newborn in days five to ten, sitter session around six months, and then a one-year cake smash to close out the year. Each session tells a different chapter of the same story, and together they make an extraordinary album.

Who books a six-month session at Lovely Baby Photography?

Most families who book a six-month session are parents who had a newborn session with me and want to continue the story. Others are families who missed the newborn window and do not want to miss this one too. Some are first-time grandparents living locally in Encinitas, Oceanside, or Vista who want to give a session as a gift.

I also see a lot of families from Scripps Encinitas and Tri-City Medical Center who heard about the studio through other new parents and are booking for the first time. Whatever the reason, the six-month session is always one of the most joyful appointments of the year.

What about the artwork?

Once you’ve seen your images we can look through product samples at the studio.   Most families at this age are putting together a first-year gallery wall, and the six-month portraits sit beautifully alongside newborn and one-year images.

I guide every family toward heirloom products: wall art, fine art albums, and matted prints. Although digital files are available and a part of most of my Collections, I love putting printed products in your hands so that digital images are not just destined to sit on a hard drive. They are artwork designed to last decades and to be passed down. Most families invest anywhere from $1000 to $6000 for their artwork and experience, and the investment page gives you an option to reach out for full pricing.

How do I book a six-month session?

Book four to six weeks before baby turns six months, earlier if you want a specific weekend date or have a theme in mind. I take a limited number of milestone sessions each month, and with over 100 five-star Google reviews, demand is consistent year-round.

Start by reaching out through the contact page and I will come back with available dates. You can also see the full milestone service at the baby milestone photography page. I serve families from across Carlsbad, North County, and the wider San Diego area.

Frequently asked questions

Does my baby need to sit up on their own for a six-month session?

No. Most babies at six months are still working on independent sitting, and that is completely fine. I have posing techniques that support baby safely throughout, including setups that work beautifully whether baby is fully upright or needs a little help. The studio has been doing this since 2009 and no baby has ever left unhappy.

What should I bring to the session?

Very little. The studio wardrobe covers outfits for baby, and I have all the props and backdrops needed. Bring any comfort items baby loves, a favorite toy or blanket, and a change of clothes just in case. Feed baby before you arrive so they come in settled and happy.

Can parents be in the photos too?

Yes, and I recommend it. A few parent-and-baby images at this age are some of the most treasured photos families end up with. We can include both parents, or just one, whatever feels right. Let me know during the booking consultation and I will plan the session accordingly.

How long does the session take?

About an hour, sometimes a little less if baby is in a great mood and we move quickly. Unlike newborn sessions that can run three to four hours around feeds and sleep, six-month sessions move at a livelier pace. Plan for a few hours at the studio and a short buffer for parking and settling in, and also time to view and select your images after we’re done shooting.

When will I see the finished images?

I pride myself on a quick turnaround.  Finished, edited images are in your hands within a week (two weeks during my busy season October to December). Finished products arrive four to six weeks after the ordering appointment, depending on what you choose.

You might also find it helpful to read about what to expect at a one-year milestone session before your session.

Do you serve families outside Carlsbad?

Yes. The studio is based in Carlsbad but I regularly see families from across North County San Diego and the wider area. If you are unsure whether you are too far, just send a message and we will figure it out.
