What to expect at a one-year milestone session in Carlsbad

First birthdays are fast. One moment you are bringing a newborn home from the hospital, and twelve months later you have a curious, opinionated one-year-old who is pulling themselves up on every piece of furniture and grinning at you like they know exactly how charming they are. I am Stacey, and after 17+ years photographing first birthdays in Carlsbad and across North County San Diego, I can tell you this session is always one of my favorites. Here is what to expect when you book a one-year cake smash session at the studio.

What is a one-year CAKE SMASH session?

A one-year cake smash session is a professional portrait session that celebrates your baby’s first birthday with styled images, family portraits, and often a cake smash. It is a larger, more layered session than the earlier milestones in the first year, and it produces a wider variety of images as a result.

At my Carlsbad studio, the session runs about two hours. That covers multiple styled looks, a family portrait block, the cake smash, and a splash bath at the end. Baby has full access to the studio wardrobe, the backdrop collection runs to over 250 options, and the custom cake is included. You arrive with your one-year-old and I take care of everything else.

What is the difference between a milestone session and a cake smash?

A milestone session is the broader birthday portrait experience or a session for kiddos in the 6 month range. A cake smash is specifically for one year sessions! Most one-year sessions at the studio include both: styled milestone portraits that show who your baby is at twelve months, and then the cake smash as the centerpiece moment.

Some families prefer to do milestone portraits only, without the cake smash. Others want the full arc from clean portraits to messy cake to bubble bath. Both are completely valid, and the structure of the session is built around what you want. We talk through this during the consultation before the session.

How is the session structured from start to finish?

We start with traditional portraits in the first two backdrop sets. Baby goes through two outfits from the studio wardrobe, and we photograph the birthday theme you have chosen for the 3rd set, the actual cake smash. These are the polished, frame-ready images that most parents want for their wall and for the grandparents.

If you choose to include some family portraits, we start with that first! Parents, siblings, anyone who matters on the day, we do a family portrait setup on one of our more basic backdrops. The cake is included. The cake is custom-made to match the session theme (as long as a 3 week advance booking is made). .

What should baby wear to a one-year session?

My studio wardrobe covers this. Baby has access to a full range of one-year outfits, from classic birthday rompers and tulle skirts to themed costumes that match the session backdrop. I recommend arriving in comfortable clothes for the car journey and letting baby change into studio outfits when you arrive.

For parents and siblings in the family portrait block, soft neutrals work best. Cream, oatmeal, dusty rose, soft grey, and pale blue all photograph well against the studio sets and do not compete with baby’s outfit. We talk through this in the consultation so nobody arrives unsure.

How do I choose a theme for the session?

The backdrop and prop collection runs to over 250 options, which means almost every theme request I receive has an answer. The most popular themes for one-year sessions in North County San Diego include Wild One, garden florals, princess and castle, woodland, safari, nautical, boho, and seasonal sets.

We will work together to select the backdrops that you want in advance!  If you have something specific in mind that you do not see on the website, tell me. I build custom sets for sessions when the theme calls for it.

What about the family portraits?

The family portrait block is one of the parts of a one-year session that parents are often most surprised by. You spend the first year behind the camera, and suddenly there is a set of images where the whole family is in the frame together, baby included, at exactly twelve months.

Siblings are welcome in the family portraits and often produce the most spontaneous, joyful images of the session. Grandparents can be included if they are in San Diego for the birthday. The milestone photography service is designed to capture the whole family picture, every person in the frame.

How much does a one-year milestone session cost?

Most families invest anywhere from $1000 up to $6000 for digital images or Collections from one of our full one-year experience, which covers the session, the styled set, the custom cake, the studio wardrobe, and if you choose, for Collections which include either a book or album with matching digital files. Full pricing can be requested via the investment page.

Something that most of my families really appreciate, is that you have the opportunity to view and select your images on the same day as the session.  Right after I’m finished shooting, I’ll be sharing the images on my large screen TV and I have a very efficient system to help you select your favorite images from the session.  I also have gorgeous product samples for you to touch and feel.  Many of my families end up going with one of my Collections that include a book, album and artwork of your walls. Most families at the one-year stage are finishing a first-year gallery wall that started with the newborn session, and the birthday images close out that collection beautifully. Wall art, fine art albums, and matted prints are the products most families choose.

If your baby is approaching their first birthday, book four to six weeks out as a minimum, and eight to twelve weeks if you want a specific weekend date or a popular theme during spring or fall. The studio takes a limited number of sessions each month and with 100+ five-star Google reviews, weekends fill reliably. Frequently asked questions

Does the session have to include a cake smash?

No. The cake smash is the most popular element of the one-year session, but if you prefer not to have the cake that is fine as well. Some families prefer styled milestone portraits only. We design the session around what you want during the consultation.

What if baby is not walking yet at one year?

That is completely fine. Most one-year-old sessions work with baby sitting, standing with support, or cruising. Walking is not required for any of the poses. The session works at every stage of development at this age.

Can I bring my own cake?

The custom cake is included in every session and is made to match your theme. If you have a specific allergy or a family tradition you want to honour with a different cake, let me know when you book and we will work it out.

How many outfits does baby go through?

Three outfit changes are included. The studio wardrobe covers both. You can bring a sentimental outfit if you want to use it in the session too.

Where do one-year sessions take place?

The full styled birthday experience, including the themed set, cake, and splash bath, is done at the Carlsbad studio. The studio gives me full control over lighting and setup, which means your little one gets the best possible results in a safe, comfortable environment.

When will the finished artwork be ready?

You see the full gallery immediately following the session. The final digital images will be delivered to you in one week during most of the year.  In October to December, I do have a two week lead time.
